Globalcomm: Embarq Logistics finds new focus

Chicago--For Embarq Logistics, formerly known as Sprint North Supply, the transition from being part of the larger Sprint organization to being the distribution and supply chain arm of Embarq is all good news.

Although the company’s expertise retains its value, the focus of its parent company ensures fewer potential conflicts and questions from potential customers.

“We’re no longer part of the ‘evil empire’ wireless organization,” said Brad Clark, vice president of sales and marketing for Embarq Logistics, with a laugh. “That really has translated into clear physical manifestations. In our conversations with customers, there are no discussions about where our regulatory interests lie or our priorities. The conversation is more around what we can do together.”

Embarq Logistics also is in a more well-defined position to use the expertise it develops for Embarq’s service provider operation to the benefit of other service providers.

“When we do a first-office application, rather than replicate that at another carrier, we can use that experience, plus the testing labs we run for Embarq will give us information we can use for other [independent operating companies],” Clark said. “It is our intention to step up and accept a leading role in the IOC community. We can be a neutral third party that is vendor-agnostic and technology-agnostic.”

The reality of the IOC market is that, while the broader challenges are similar, the specific challenges and opportunities of each player can vary widely, depending on geography, the existing plant, the economics of the serving territory and other factors, Clark said. In addition, there has been fragmentation of the vendor community, with more companies addressing the market than in the past, which can mean more options but also more confusion and potential uncertainty, he said.

Embarq Logistics now can address wireless operators as it is doing in building cell sites for Pioneer Telephone, Clark said. The company will continue to focus on EF&I–engineer, furnish and install–with a heavy emphasis on pre-integration of solutions that dramatically cut installation time of equipment such as digital loop carriers, DSLAMs and other outside plant gear.

The company is also extending its product portfolio, most recently announcing exclusive relationships with Aktino, Entrisphere and Wave 7 Optics.
