Verizon`s Motorola Xoom 3G tablet to receive 4G LTE upgrade in September

26/07/2011

Did Motorola feel the sting of Samsung`s 4G LTE tablet announcement yesterday (CP: Verizon`s oh-so-profitable 4G LTE network to gain two devices July 28)? Coincidence or not, Motorola released a correspondence, getting out the word that in September it will make good on its promise of a 4G LTE upgrade for its Xoom tablet, Droid Life is reporting.

The upgrade has already passed FCC muster, says the site, and Motorola Xoom owners should, if they haven`t already, receive an email from either Motorola or Verizon, informing them of the upgrade. Until September, states the Verizon email, "learn more about what you can do to prepare for the 4G TE upgrade to your Motorola Xoom by backing up data, encrypting, or resetting your Xoom tablet."

Sounds like a lot of work. And no wonder — Xoom owners will need to ship off their tablets to receive the hardware upgrade, which could take up to six business days, according to GigOm. Sparing insult to injury, all parties confirm there will be no fee for the upgrade.

Though how many extra gigabytes Xoom owners wind up blowing through, with 4G speeds in their hands — and Verizon`s data plans no longer unlimited — may be another story.

Sales of the Xoom have been called "disappointing," "slow" and "poor," depending on the analyst asked. Tomorrow, Motorola will announce the results of its second fiscal quarter, hopefully replacing the rumors with hard facts.
